Join the Photowalk

Join us for the third edition of The Photographic Assignment exploring Vancouver's West End. This guided photowalk invites photographers of all experience levels to spend a few hours together, slowing down, looking more carefully, and photographing alongside like minded people. The emphasis is not simply on making pictures, but on observation, instinct, conversation, and becoming more aware of how we move through and respond to the world around us.

The Photographic Assignment

A direction for the day, rather than a set of rules.

At the beginning of the walk, each photographer will receive a photographic assignment based on their chosen level: Easy, Moderate, Advanced, or Journalist. Think of it as a direction rather than a set of rules, something to give a sense of purpose and encourage you to look at the city differently.

Following the walk, you will select one photograph to be produced as a hand finished 8 × 10 inch, one of a kind, museum quality archival print on 100% cotton fine art paper. Think velvety smooth, heavyweight matte paper, a soft tonal palette, and hand torn deckled edges.

Finished prints will be presented at our print reveal on September 20th (more info and location TBA).

The Photowalk

A few hours spent photographing together.

We will meet at 9:00AM at A-maze-ing Laughter, Morton Park, 1800 Morton Ave. before setting out to photograph throughout Denman Street, English Bay Beach, and the Stanley Park Sea Wall.

Throughout the walk, we will spend time photographing in two or three different areas, meeting back up as we go to share observations, ask questions, and talk about composition, anticipation, approach, changing light conditions, and how natural light can be used more intentionally to strengthen our photographs.

The walk is designed to remain personal and engaging, with plenty of time for conversation, questions, and individual guidance along the way.

We will finish photographing at approximately 12:00PM, followed by an optional social hour in Stanley Park at Stanley Park Brewing, Restaurant & Brewpub.

Bring whatever camera you enjoy using. Film cameras, digital cameras, compact cameras, and phones are all welcome. The emphasis of the photowalk is on seeing and making photographs rather than on equipment.
