The costumes come off. The city carries on.
On the afternoon after Halloween, Vancouver returns to its Sunday rhythm, but the streets may still hold traces of the night before. A forgotten decoration, a costume worn one day longer, the remnants of a celebration, or simply the contrast between last night's spectacle and today's ordinary routines.
We'll meet where Denman Street meets Davie Street, at A-maze-ing Laughter in Morton Park, and spend three hours exploring two of the West End's busiest, most visually layered streets. Storefronts, café windows, passing pedestrians, street corners, colourful signage, and the changing afternoon light will give us plenty to observe.
The Day After Halloween is an invitation to look closely at the city in transition: the unexpected humour, fleeting gestures, contrasts, and small human stories that make street photography compelling. We won't be staging Halloween scenes or chasing a particular image. We'll follow what the streets give us.
Whether the pavement is wet or dry, whether the Halloween atmosphere lingers or has vanished entirely, there is always something worth noticing.
A little direction can change the way we see.
Every participant receives a photographic assignment suited to their experience level: Easy, Moderate, Advanced, or Journalist. Each assignment provides a direction for the afternoon, encouraging you to look beyond the obvious and notice something you might otherwise overlook.
Perhaps you'll discover a surprising colour relationship, a scene that tells a story in a single frame, an amusing juxtaposition, or a subtle trace of Halloween against the ordinary life of the neighbourhood. The assignment is not a set of rules. It is a starting point for your own way of seeing.
All photographic experience levels are welcome. Bring the camera you enjoy using, whether digital or film.
Three hours on the streets of the West End.
We'll meet at 12:00PM beside A-maze-ing Laughter, the public sculpture at 1800 Davie Plaza in Morton Park, near Denman and Davie Streets. From there, we'll explore Denman and Davie Streets, looking for interesting light, compositions, and unexpected moments on a busy Sunday afternoon.
We'll spend time in approximately three different areas, breaking off to photograph independently before coming back together as a group. This gives everyone a chance to slow down, observe, and explore their own way of seeing the world around them. Along the way, Andrew will point out interesting light, shadows, and details that might otherwise go unnoticed, and we'll discuss what makes certain photographs work.
The photowalk finishes at 3:00PM, followed by an optional social hour at a licensed establishment on Davie Street. It's a chance to relax, get to know one another, and continue the conversation over a drink or something to eat. The location will be announced once confirmed. Food and beverages are not included in registration.
Come ready for a November afternoon.
Rain or Shine
We walk rain or shine, unless conditions become unsafe. Overcast skies, puddles, reflections, and rain-soaked storefronts can be wonderful material for street photography.
Dress for Three Hours Outdoors
Wear comfortable walking shoes and layers suited to early-November weather. Bring a rain jacket or umbrella if needed. We'll be moving along public sidewalks and stopping frequently to photograph.
Protect Your Equipment
Bring a cover or dry bag for equipment that isn't weather-sealed, along with a small cloth for wiping rain from your camera or lens.
Plan Your Arrival
Allow time to reach Morton Park before noon. The West End can be busy on Sundays; check transit and parking options in advance. Remember that daylight saving time ends early that morning.

A few things to know before we begin.
Do I need to be an experienced photographer?
No. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to experienced photographers. Assignments are tailored to Easy, Moderate, Advanced, or Journalist levels.
What kind of camera should I bring?
Bring your own camera, digital or film. The walk is about seeing, not particular equipment. Film photographers should arrange development and scans in time for print submission.
Will we be photographing Halloween costumes?
Possibly, if we encounter them naturally, but costumes aren't required or staged. The theme is about observing the neighbourhood the day after Halloween, including whatever traces remain—and whatever ordinary moments emerge.
Does the walk take place in the rain?
Yes, rain or shine, except where weather conditions become unsafe. Dress appropriately and protect your equipment.
Is the social hour included?
The gathering is optional and there is no additional fee to join the group. The licensed venue on Davie Street will be announced later. Any food or beverages you order are at your own expense, and venue age and service policies apply.
What is included with registration?
A three-hour guided photowalk, your individual photographic assignment, and one archival 8 × 10 inch print from your submitted photograph. Details about the print reveal will follow.
