The Language of Colour
Workshop Overview
Join Andrew Legere, fine art photographer and owner of Legere Fine Art Services, for a two week hands on workshop exploring the philosophy and photography of William Eggleston. Together we will study one of the pioneers of colour photography, examining how he transformed the ordinary into extraordinary photographs through his remarkable use of colour, light, and composition.
At a time when serious photography was almost exclusively associated with black and white, William Eggleston challenged the conventions of the medium by embracing colour as a powerful visual language. Rather than photographing spectacular places or dramatic events, he turned his attention to everyday life—suburban streets, parked cars, grocery stores, signs, ceilings, and quiet corners of the American South. Through his photographs, colour became more than a descriptive element; it became a way of communicating mood, atmosphere, and emotion. His work forever changed the way photographers understand and use colour.
In this workshop we will explore Eggleston's philosophy of seeing, his approach to composition, and the expressive potential of colour. Together we will examine how colour influences meaning, how it shapes our emotional response to a photograph, and how ordinary subjects can become visually compelling through careful observation and thoughtful composition.
Over two weeks you will develop your understanding of colour through a series of guided photographic assignments and collaborative critiques. Beginning with an introductory seminar, we will study Eggleston's working methods before heading into the streets to photograph our own surroundings. Through discussion, editing, and thoughtful critique, you will refine your ability to communicate through colour and create photographs that move beyond documentation toward personal expression.
Your final project will be professionally printed, and presented as a finished museum quality piece. Two photographs will be carefully refined through the proofing process before being archival mounted, custom matted, and framed in two 11×14 frames by Legere Fine Art Services. The result is not simply a print, but two finished works of art, thoughtfully crafted and ready to hang, exhibit, or become part of a permanent collection.

The Assignments
Over the course of two weeks, you will complete two photographic assignments inspired by the photography of William Eggleston.
We will begin by exploring colour as a visual language, learning how colour, light, and composition work together to shape atmosphere, emotion, and meaning. Following a collaborative critique and discussion, you will apply what you have learned to create your final photograph.
Rather than searching for dramatic subjects, these assignments encourage you to photograph the ordinary with fresh eyes. Through careful observation and thoughtful composition, you will discover how colour can transform familiar places and everyday objects into compelling photographs. Your final images will then be taken through the complete fine art process, from proofing and printing to archival mounting, custom matting, and professional framing.

A Thought to Leave With
William Eggleston showed us that extraordinary photographs do not require extraordinary places. They begin with learning to see colour as more than description. Colour has the power to shape mood, direct attention, and transform the familiar into something unforgettable.
This workshop is an invitation to see the ordinary with fresh eyes. To recognize that beauty is often waiting in the quiet places we pass every day, and that colour itself can become one of the most expressive elements in a photograph.
