The Photographic Process

A Five Week Exhibition Workshop in Fine Art Photography
June 5 — July 10

In this edition of The Photographic Process, participants will study the photographic philosophy and visual language of Ralph Gibson while developing a cohesive body of black and white photographs through guided photowalks, critique, sequencing, editing, printmaking, and exhibition development. This workshop explores photography not simply as image making, but as a complete artistic process, centred around understanding how photographs made on the street and throughout everyday life evolve from captured moments into finished fine art experienced in galleries and physical space. Photowalks take place throughout central Vancouver and are intentionally planned around locations that are easily accessible by SkyTrain and public transit. In person workshops, critiques, are held in Mount Pleasant at Legere Fine Art Studio or nearby partnering businesses.

Each photographer will produce a one of a kind museum quality archival exhibition print for the final public exhibition, professionally printed and custom framed by Legere Fine Art Services using museum glass, archival materials, and professional museum quality framing methods. The finished exhibition print and custom framing package represents over $500 in professional production and presentation value.

Participants will keep their finished exhibition piece, and will also receive a complete set of twenty working prints from the collaborative editing and sequencing sessions, one signed artist proof print, and an archival print portfolio featuring all exhibited photographs from the final exhibition.

Led by Andrew Legere, founder of Legere Fine Art Services, alongside invited guests and participating arts professionals, this workshop draws from a lifetime devoted to photography, printmaking, and exhibition presentation. Andrew has spent close to three decades pursuing photography, beginning in the darkroom as a young teenager, and later living, working, and photographing throughout dozens of countries around the world. Alongside his photographic practice, he has spent nearly a decade working professionally in custom framing and exhibition presentation, collaborating internationally with artists, galleries, collectors, museums, and institutions through an approach grounded in craftsmanship, conservation, and a deep respect for the photographic print.

FINAL PUBLIC EXHIBITION & ARTIST GATHERING
    Friday, July 10 (evening)

Final exhibition details and location will be announced during the workshop.

From Observation to Exhibition

This five week exhibition workshop is designed for photographers interested in developing a deeper understanding of the photographic image through critique, discussion, sequencing, printing, and public presentation.

Working within a small group of photographers, participants will study the work of Ralph Gibson while exploring how a cohesive body of photographic work begins to take shape through editing, sequencing, visual language, material presentation, and exhibition.

Throughout the program, participants will develop and refine a cohesive body of black and white photographic work toward a final public exhibition. Through guided photowalks, professional critique, sequencing, editing, museum quality printing, matting, custom framing, and a series of workshop assignments, participants will move through the complete fine art photographic process from initial observation to finished exhibition work.

The goal is not simply to create stronger photographs, but to better understand how photographs communicate, how meaning and narrative emerge between images, and how everyday moments photographed on the street can evolve into lasting physical works experienced publicly beyond the screen.

  • VISUAL LANGUAGE

A two hour online seminar introducing the work of Ralph Gibson through visual language, sequencing, symbolism, abstraction, and the broader concept of the photographic image.

    PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION

Four guided black and white photowalks exploring observation, form, shadow, abstraction, symbolism, atmosphere, and visual narrative through the everyday environment. Each walk is designed to build progressively toward a more intentional and cohesive photographic language, encouraging participants to move beyond documentation and toward creating photographs that function together as part of a larger body of work.

    CRITICAL REVIEW

One online professional critique and one in person group critique focused on editing, sequencing, and understanding how photographs begin to function together as a cohesive body of work.

Critiques will be conducted by Andrew Legere alongside invited photographers and arts professionals, encouraging thoughtful discussion surrounding visual language, presentation, and the photographic image.

    EDIT & SEQUENCE

Participants will work with printed selections of their photographs during a collaborative editing and sequencing session, where images are physically arranged, discussed, and refined as the exhibition begins to take shape.

    PROOF & FINISH

Final exhibition photographs will first be produced as physical proof prints and reviewed together in person, allowing participants to study tone, contrast, paper surface, scale, and presentation before making final adjustments to their edits. From there, the finished exhibition print will be professionally produced, signed, mounted, matted, and framed using museum glass, archival materials, and professional museum quality framing methods.

    EXHIBITION

The workshop culminates in a final public exhibition and artist gathering presenting the completed body of work as professionally produced archival photographic prints experienced collectively in a physical space.

The exhibition will include a collective exhibition statement reflecting the ideas, themes, visual language, and photographic approach developed throughout the workshop, alongside the carefully sequenced and professionally presented prints.

Week 2

Day 1 - Second guided black and white photowalk focused on abstraction, symbolism, visual ambiguity, and learning how photographs can suggest meaning beyond direct observation.

Day 2 - First online professional critique and group discussion reviewing the first photographic assignment through image selection, editing, photographic intention, and understanding how photographs begin to function together as a cohesive body of work, alongside the introduction of the second photographic assignment focused on developing a cohesive sequence of photographs for the week 4 editing and sequencing session.

“From Observation to Exhibition”

Week 3

Day 1 - Third guided black and white photowalk focused on visual tension, atmosphere, geometry, and creating photographs that suggest narrative rather than directly explain it.

Day 2 - In person group critique focused on sequencing, visual relationships between photographs, editing, presentation, and the development of a cohesive body of black and white photographic work.

Week 4

Day 1 - Fourth guided photowalk focused on visual tension, atmosphere, geometry, and creating photographs that suggest narrative through sequencing, repetition, and visual rhythm.

Day 2 - Collaborative editing and sequencing session using professionally printed work prints from each participant’s twenty photograph assignment, exploring sequencing, visual rhythm, recurring ideas within the work, and how individual photographs begin to function together within a larger collective exhibition, leading toward final image selection.

"I embrace the abstract in photography and exist on a few bits of order extracted from the chaos of reality."
-Ralph Gibson

Week 5

Day 1 - One on one in studio final exhibition print proofing and review session with Andrew Legere. Each participant will meet individually for final edit refinements based on a physical artist proof print before final production. Artist proof prints will be signed and dated during the session.

Day 2 - Signing and dating of final exhibition photographs in studio, alongside a one hour seminar on custom picture framing, museum presentation standards, archival materials, glazing options, and photographic presentation, followed by a social hour and group discussion surrounding the completed body of work.

Public Exhibition & Artist Gathering

The workshop will culminate in a final public exhibition and artist gathering presenting the completed body of work as professionally produced archival photographic prints. The exhibition will bring together the collective visual language, sequencing, and photographic ideas developed throughout the workshop as finished physical works experienced publicly beyond the screen.

Final exhibition details and location will be announced during the workshop

Who this is for

Who this is for

This workshop is intended for photographers interested in developing their work beyond the screen through critique, sequencing, printing, and public presentation.

Participants do not need to be professional photographers, but should be open to thoughtful discussion, honest critique, and the process of refining photographs into a cohesive body of work.

The workshop is designed for those interested in exploring photography more deeply, not simply as a technical process, but as a visual language shaped through editing, sequencing, atmosphere, abstraction, and presentation.

Participants should be comfortable engaging in group discussion surrounding both the strengths and weaknesses of their work while developing a deeper understanding of photography as both image and physical object.

On The Photographic Process

The Photographic Process is about understanding how images become finished works. Not simply how they are taken, but how they are edited, sequenced, printed, framed, discussed, and ultimately experienced in public.

In an age where most photographs exist only briefly on screens, this workshop explores photography as something physical, intentional, and lasting. Centered around black and white photography, participants will examine how images communicate through sequence, abstraction, symbolism, atmosphere, shadow, and presentation while developing a cohesive body of work.

Using the work of Ralph Gibson as a point of departure, the workshop encourages participants to think more critically about the photographic image and the visual language of fine art photography. Through critique, collaborative editing, print proofing, and exhibition preparation, participants will explore how photographs evolve into finished physical works experienced beyond the screen, in the physical world.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the curatorial and photographic process behind developing a cohesive exhibition from a group of photographers working toward a shared visual direction. The workshop is ultimately about executing a concept, studying a significant body of photographic work, and creating new work shaped through observation, critique, discussion, sequencing, and refinement.
