The Creative Photographer
Whether you are just beginning your creative journey or have years of experience behind the camera, The Creative Photographer is for those who are curious, open to experimentation, and interested in developing a deeper understanding of photography.
The Creative Photographer is built around one simple idea: becoming a stronger photographer begins by understanding the photographers who came before us.
Photography has always been a conversation between photographers. Every generation learns from the one before it, borrowing ideas, questioning traditions, and discovering new ways of seeing the world. The photographs we make today become part of that same conversation.
Throughout this series we will explore four influential photographers, their bodies of work, creative philosophies, and the ways they approached making photographs. Through discussion, practical assignments, guided photowalks, critique, and experimentation, we will use their work as a point of departure for our own creative practice.
These workshops are not about copying great photographers. They are about discovering what their work can teach us. By studying their ideas, methods, and visual language, we begin to see differently, photograph more intentionally, and develop a stronger personal voice.
Photography has always been a physical medium. Throughout this series we will place a strong emphasis on seeing our work finished as prints. Together we will explore fine art printing, paper, framing, and presentation while experiencing our photographs as physical objects rather than digital files. There is something special about holding a photograph in your hands or seeing it on a wall. It changes the way we look at our own work.

The Masterwork Series is designed for photographers seeking a deeper and more personal creative experience. Alongside the four workshops, participants develop an independent body of work through ongoing one on one mentorship, critique, and guided refinement. Rather than responding to a single assignment, the Masterwork encourages participants to pursue an idea of their own, culminating in a finished exhibition piece that reflects their individual photographic voice.
Personal mentorship is at the heart of the program. If you are unable to attend a session, I will work with you individually to ensure you never fall behind. Through recorded seminars, one on one meetings, phone calls, critiques, and honest feedback, we will continue developing your work throughout the summer.
The Final Exhibition
The Creative Photographer concludes as photography should, with an exhibition. Every participant is invited to exhibit the finished artwork created during their workshop, transforming months of learning into a public celebration of photography. Planned for September, the exhibition aims to become part of a major Vancouver public event, bringing photography out of the gallery and into the public realm, where it can be experienced by thousands of visitors.
A Conversation Through Photography
Every great photographer has approached the world differently. Some searched for form, others for emotion, mystery, humour, or beauty. They each developed their own way of seeing, leaving behind bodies of work that continue to influence photographers today.
Photography has always evolved through this exchange of ideas. Every generation learns from the one before it, borrowing, questioning, and building upon what came before. The photographs we make today become part of that same conversation.
The purpose of this series is not to imitate great photographers. It is to understand how they thought, why they made the photographs they did, and what their work can teach us about our own creative practice. By exploring different approaches to photography, we begin to see more intentionally and develop a stronger personal vision.
The Creative Photographer is ultimately about learning to think like an artist. The photographers we study simply become guides, opening new ways of seeing the world and helping us better understand our own.

To ensure meaningful mentorship and individual attention, enrollment for The Masterwork Series is limited to six participants.
While each workshop within The Creative Photographer welcomes up to ten participants, only six photographers will develop an independent Masterwork alongside the workshop series.
The small group format encourages discussion, experimentation, and thoughtful critique while providing plenty of opportunity for individual guidance. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and develop their work at their own pace throughout the summer.
Every workshop concludes with the creation of a professionally printed and custom framed exhibition piece inspired by the creative philosophy explored during that workshop. Participants enrolled in The Masterwork Series will also develop an independent Masterwork through one on one mentorship and guided refinement, creating a sixth exhibition piece that reflects their own photographic vision.
The Creative Photographer concludes with a public exhibition, bringing together the work created throughout the summer. Every participant is invited to exhibit the finished photographs produced during the workshops, while those completing The Masterwork Series will also present their independent Masterwork as the culmination of their summer's work.
A Note from Andrew
Over the years I have become increasingly interested not only in how photographs are made, but in how great photographers think. While mastering a camera is an essential part of the craft, becoming a stronger photographer also means understanding the philosophies, creative processes, and ways of seeing that have shaped the medium for more than a century. Every workshop in this series begins with a photographer whose ideas transformed photography, using their work as a point of departure for our own.
Together we will explore photographers whose work fundamentally changed the way we understand photography, not to imitate them, but to understand the ideas that guided their work. We will discuss why they made the photographs they did, how they approached the world, and what their philosophies can teach us about our own photographs.
Photography is also a craft, and questions about cameras, lenses, exposure, composition, printing, and technique are always welcome. My hope, however, is that you leave with something more enduring than technical knowledge: a different way of seeing.
