Workshop Overview

Join Andrew Legere, fine art photographer and owner of Legere Fine Art Services for a two week hands on workshop exploring the philosophy and photographic joiners of David Hockney. Together we will study Hockney's approach to seeing before creating our own photographic joiners from concept to finished framed artwork.

While David Hockney may not immediately come to mind as one of the great photographers of the twentieth century, his exploration of Polaroid grids and 35mm photographic joiners during the 1980s represents one of the most innovative and influential studies in contemporary photography. At a time when most photographs described a single moment from a single point of view, Hockney questioned whether that was truly how we experience the world. Rather than relying on a single exposure, he assembled dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of individual photographs into a single composition. These photographic joiners unfold through time, movement, and observation, challenging the conventions of photography and inviting the viewer to look rather than simply glance.

In this workshop we will explore Hockney's philosophy of seeing, his creative process, and the techniques he developed while creating some of the most influential photographic works of the twentieth century. Together we will examine how his joiners challenge conventional photography before creating our own.

Over two weeks you will learn to photograph and assemble your own photographic joiners. We will begin with an introductory seminar exploring Hockney's process before creating a small study using approximately twenty photographic prints. After a group critique and discussion, you will apply what you've learned to produce a larger, more considered photographic joiner.

Your final project will be an 18 × 24 inch photographic joiner, professionally mounted and custom framed by Legere Fine Art Services, ready to hang or exhibit. The workshop includes all printing for both projects, with approximately 75 photographic prints produced throughout the process, along with the mounting and custom framing of your final piece.

What We Will Explore

• The philosophy behind Hockney's photographic joiners.

• Why perspective changes as we move through space.

• Time, memory, and movement as photographic subjects.

• Looking beyond decisive moments.

• Building photographs through observation rather than a single decisive moment.

• Using multiple photographs to explore time, movement, and perspective within a single composition.

What You Will Leave With

  • A completed 18 × 24 inch photographic joiner, professionally mounted and custom framed.

  • A deeper understanding of photography beyond the single frame.

  • Greater confidence seeing connections between individual photographs.

  • Practical experience creating a photographic joiner from concept to completion.

  • A broader understanding of observation, time, and perspective as creative tools.

The Assignments

Over the course of two weeks, each participant will create two finished photographic joiners.

We will begin by creating a small study using allowing you to become familiar with Hockney's process of observing, photographing, and assembling multiple viewpoints into a single composition. Following a collaborative critique and discussion, you will apply what you've learned to create your final larger 18×24 photographic joiner.

Rather than searching for dramatic subjects, the assignment encourages you to carefully observe an object, person, or environment from multiple viewpoints. As you move through space and time, each individual photograph becomes one small fragment of a larger visual experience. The goal is not simply to document a scene, but to construct a photograph that reflects the experience of looking.

A Thought to Leave With

One of Hockney's greatest contributions to photography was not simply the photographic joiner itself, but the reminder that seeing is an active process. This workshop is an invitation to look longer, and discover that a photograph can become something much richer than a single exposure.
