The Geometry of Seeing
Workshop Overview
Join Andrew Legere, fine art photographer and owner of Legere Fine Art Services, for a two week hands on workshop exploring the philosophy and photography of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Together we will study one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century, examining how patience, observation, and anticipation shaped his remarkable body of work before applying those ideas to our own photography.
Henri Cartier-Bresson believed that photography was not simply about recording the world, but about recognizing the precise instant when form, light, gesture, and meaning come together. He described this as the decisive moment; the fleeting fraction of a second when the visual elements of a scene achieve perfect balance. Working almost exclusively with a small Leica camera and a single lens, Cartier-Bresson wandered streets, villages, and cities across the world, quietly observing life unfold before him. His photographs were rarely staged or manipulated. Instead, they were built through patience, intuition, and an extraordinary ability to anticipate what was about to happen.
In this workshop we will explore Cartier-Bresson's philosophy of seeing, his approach to composition, and the visual geometry that underpins many of his most celebrated photographs. We will study how lines, shapes, shadows, reflections, and human movement work together to create photographs that feel both spontaneous and remarkably ordered. Rather than searching for interesting subjects, we will learn to recognize moments before they happen and position ourselves so that the photograph comes to us.
Over two weeks you will develop your ability to anticipate photographs through a series of guided assignments and group critiques. Beginning with an introductory seminar, we will study Cartier-Bresson's working methods before heading into the streets to put these ideas into practice. Through discussion, editing, and thoughtful critique, you will refine both your observation and your understanding of visual timing.
Your final project will be professionally proofed, printed, and presented as a finished museum quality piece. Each photograph will be carefully refined through the proofing process before being archival mounted, custom matted, and framed in a 16 × 20 inch frame by Legere Fine Art Services. The result is not simply a print, but a finished work of art, thoughtfully crafted and ready to hang, exhibit, or become part of a permanent collection.

The Assignments
Over the course of two weeks, you will complete two photographic assignments inspired by the photographs of French Photographer, Henri Cartier-Bresson.
We will begin with a study in anticipation, learning to slow down and recognize the relationship between light, geometry, gesture, and timing. Following a collaborative critique and discussion, you will apply what you have learned to create your final photograph.
Rather than searching for dramatic subjects, these assignments encourage patience, observation, and thoughtful composition. The goal is not simply to capture an interesting moment, but to recognize the precise instant when composition, movement, and meaning come together. Your final image will then be taken through the complete fine art process, from proofing and printing to archival mounting, custom matting, and professional framing.

A Thought to Leave With
Henri Cartier-Bresson believed that photography begins long before the shutter is released. It begins with learning to see. To anticipate. To recognize the relationships between light, form, movement, and human experience.
The decisive moment is not something we chase. It is something we learn to recognize. Every photograph begins as an act of observation. The more we learn to anticipate, the more we discover that the world quietly arranges itself into photographs long before we press the shutter.
